Then you don't understand history very well. "Missus" is a term of respect, not just a label for marriage. While it's always been appropriate to a young unmarried woman "Miss", it becomes rather disrespectful to an older unmarried woman "Miss" unless she's indicated that she likes it. It's more respectful to say "Missus", regardless of whether she's married or not. Same thing as addressing a man as "Mister."

plalease I understand what you're trying to say but in this day and age MRS. only implies to those who are married.....but thanks for elaborating your history,for it is what it is HISTORY.

I practice it when dealing with older generations, you betcha I do. Respect for any one person is not determined by my own standards, nor those of my generation. It's determined by each person on their own standards.

Child, you must have just fallen off the truck yesterday. Your little life span doesn't amount to a little tiny pile of ant shit. History has been around a long time before you came along, and it will be around long long after you're gone. People will people "Mrs." as a sign of respect whether you approve or not, and they will be doing it for a long long time. And they will do a lot of other things because of history.

I understand that there's history in all aspects of life but to go around addressing people by MRS.MISS.MS before their name on your day to day speech is simply pretentious unless you're a child?

however Should you chose to argue over this than pls put either MRS. MS. MISS. before my name when you actually talk to me in person ,this way your argument would seem slightly legit and non flakey.

reminds me of when I worked as society editor for a small town daily newspaper. These ladies would send in their news stories of their monthly meetings, tea parties, bridge club, etc. "and a good time was had by all" (excuse me while I vomit...) Included in these stories were the list of all those who attended: Mrs. Joe Johnson, Mrs. Alvin Adams, Mrs. Robert Rhodes, Mrs. Thomas Titmouse, ad nauseum. It ticked me off to no end that these women preferred to be known by their husbands' names rather than their own identities. I got over it, though. Just had to learn some tolerance and respect for generational differences. In their day (as today is now yours and MY day), it was different. A woman addressed as "Mrs. Maggie Magpie" or just "Maggie Magpie" was clearly either UNmarried or divorced (tsk tsk). It was a sign of respect *to them* to be known by their husbands' names. Just as I demand respect by my own terms, these women deserved the same respect by THEIR terms.

Not too long ago I ran across an old check book from my first marriage, back in 'x. The account was under Mr. & Mrs. Joe Blow, and I signed my checks Mrs. Joe Blow. Does look odd now, but it was the way it was done even at that time. I don't ever re gagging when I signed those checks.
