Etiquette question...what is the appropriate response to a lesbian couple getting engaged? I thought it was "Oh congratulations! I'm sure you'll be very happy" or something like that. (Just like I'd respond to a straight couple getting engaged or anyone deciding to commit to each other.) I've done that twice lately, but it seems to have fallen flat. Did I unwittingly fall into some lesbian commitment faux pas? Any thoughts?

engaged heading toward what? They probably want presents. I know I would.

Commitment ceremony in the spring I think it's a real commitment, just felt like my response was not received well. oh well.

Maybe they were just having a bad day?

It happened with two different couples, so I think I see a pattern here. Anyway, I hope they are both very happy and am officially letting it go now. I've got go work, now. Have a good day y'all.

It sounds like you're saying the right thing "congratulations" "Best wishes" "I'm so happy for you" etc... Whenever I try to get too creative with those kinds of sentiments, I wind up sounding stupid.

i think you're supposed to congratulate the groo m and say "best wishes" to the bride. since the groom is lucky to have acquired such a nice little piece of property, no?

I just remembered something I think some people consider it bad luck to say "congratulations" before a wished for event has taken place just so you don't jinx it. I think you are supposed to say, "best wishes" or something to that effect. I always thought that it applied to pregnant women, but maybe it also applies to engagements?

When I was a little ballerina our ballet teacher taught us to say, "merde" before recitals etc... I never knew what it meant until I met a French girl at summer camp.

Someone learning English thought it was "Break your legs." Still makes me laugh like I'm high.

yep and you also do this funky thing where you pinch the other dancers' shoulders when you say merde to each of them. fun times.
